Grading and Assessment

Grading and Assessment
11/17/2015

The big debate going on for Physical and Health educators is what to grade students on. If a student can throw a football does that make them physically educated? The answer is no. Teachers should be teaching the knowledge needed to continue a healthy lifestyle. So grading should be graded less on the skill and more on the knowledge. Educators and students need to know that physical education class is more than sports and athletes.

  1. Agreed. I feel like a lot of students have the wrong idea, which degrades their motivation to want to participate in and kind of physical activity in PE classes. You should not be grading someone based on their skill level, however the knowledge to that skill, or term whatever you are learning, should be graded. For example, have a couple weeks where you talk about the FITT guidelines and knowing the difference between moderate and vigorous. Make sure they know how to find their THR zone so if they want to, individually workout and benefit themselves because now they are aware of what they need to do to become physically active. And they could do something that they enjoy that you might not be teaching in the class.

  2. I could not agree more. For so long students were only taught and graded on sport skills. This was easy and maybe useful for the athletes in the class, but then for the students that didn't play sports it was a turn off. I'm glad that more educators are moving more towards a curriculum that involves fitness education and lifetime leisure activities. It is also great for the reputation of Physical Educators to progress in their teaching so they do not get the common reputation of "just rolling out the balls."
